Il disagio di fronte alla volgarità e alla massificazione della società moderna, la ricerca di valori più elevati, la forza liberatrice degli impulsi primordiali, il rimettersi in gioco a partire da una nuova consapevolezza. Sono questi alcuni dei temi che si intrecciano nel "Lupo della steppa", uno dei romanzi più "radicali" e più affascinanti di Hesse, pubblicato nel 1927 in un'Europa in cui i regimi totalitari si andavano moltiplicando.

Hermann Hesse non ha mai scritto un'autobiografia, ma ha affidato la sua visione del mondo a scritti in cui la biografia confina con il romanzo.

Hesse had written the first part of the book easily enough, but had to stop for a year with depression, before completing it in 1922. The book is a synthesis of Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, and Christian thought, though Hesse rejected all conventional religion for a more individual and personal path.
