Il 1° gennaio 1958 nasce la Comunità economica europea, primo fondamentale passo verso l'Europa unita. Già nei primi anni '60 gli scambi commerciali fra paesi comunitari aumentano del 30% e nel periodo 1958-1970 raddoppiano percentualmente rispetto a quelli del commercio mondiale nel suo complesso.
