Učenec ze studených krajů se odstěhuje do země, kde je pořád horko. Vůbec si na to nemůže zvyknout, a proto přes den zůstává doma a ven vychází jen večer. Po západu slunce městečko a jeho obyvatelé ožívají a je na co se dívat! Hrdinovu zvědavost však nejvíc dráždí protější dům. Zůstává tichý, jako by byl neobydlený, a přesto z něj v noci vychází podivné světlo... Aby přišel záhadě na kloub, odpoutá od sebe učenec vlastní stín a pošle ho na výzvědy. Stín se však začne vymykat kontrole a snaží se převzít roli pána.

Dva sousedé mají stejné jméno, a aby je lidé rozlišili, jednomu říkají Mikula a tomu druhému Mikulka. První je bohatý, má čtyři koně, ale je hloupý a závistivý.
