First published in 1902, Heart of Darkness has clearly earned its place in literary history. The story is based on Conrad’s personal experiences in Central Africa and closely parallels many of the events that occurred while he worked his way up the Congo River, and back, on a steam wheeler. "La laguna" è un racconto breve composto nel 1896 e pubblicato per la prima volta nel "Conrhill Magazine". La storia narra di un uomo bianco, riferito come "Tuan" (l'equivalente di Lord o Sir) che viaggia attraverso la foresta pluviale indonesiana. L'uomo è costretto a fermarsi per una notte con un amico malesiano di nome Arsat. Al suo arrivo trova Arsat sofferente perchè la sua amata sta morendo. Arsat racconta all'uomo la storia del suo passato. La storia è colma di simbolismi, quali l'uso del chiaro/scuro, bianco/nero, alba/tramonto.
