Im Oktober 1928 hielt Virginia Woolf zwei Vorträge am ersten Frauencollege Großbritanniens an der Universität Cambridge. Ob ihnen bewusst sei, fragte Woolf ihre Zuhörerinnen, dass sie vielleicht "das am häufigsten abgehandelte Tier des Universums" seien? Schließlich wurde Literatur über Frauen fast ausschließlich von Männern verfasst. Aus Woolfs Vorträgen entstand der Essay Ein Zimmer für sich allein, den sie ein Jahr später veröffentlichte.

Virginia Woolf (January 25, 1882 - March 28, 1941) was an English writer from Kensington, London, who pioneered a narrative mode called "stream of consciousness" to describe the thoughts and feelings of the narrator. Regarded as one of the most prominent modernist 20th-century writers, Woolf's works have gained much attention for inspiring feminism, as well as, numerous films, novels, and plays. The following recording is from a radio broadcast on April 29th, 1937.

Virginia Woolf nos revela en esta obra, básicamente, la evolución de su pensamiento feminista en relación con la literatura. El libro empieza planteándonos una pregunta: ¿Qué necesitan las mujeres para escribir buenas novelas? La respuesta la irá plasmando y argumentando a través de la exposición de situaciones diferentes, en ocasiones inventadas o supuestas, donde predominarán las mujeres. La conclusión final es que para que las mujeres escriban buenas novelas necesitan independencia económica y personal, es decir, una habitación propia. 

La duquesa y el joyero de Virginia Woolf es un cuento que explora las complejidades de las relaciones humanas y las expectativas sociales. La historia sigue a Oliver Bacon, un joyero modesto, que se enamora perdidamente de la duquesa de Lambourne, una mujer de alta alcurnia. A pesar de las diferencias sociales abismales entre ellos, Bacon cree que puede conquistar el corazón de la duquesa con un regalo extraordinario: un collar de esmeraldas. Sin embargo, la duquesa no muestra ningún interés en el collar ni en Bacon, lo que lo sumerge en una espiral de desesperación y obsesión.
