An unnamed narrator pieces together the story of an area known by the locals as the "blasted heath" in the wild hills west of the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts. The narrator discovers that many years ago a meteorite crashed there, poisoning every living being nearby; vegetation grows large but foul tasting, animals are driven mad and deformed into grotesque shapes, and the people go insane or die one by one.

Written in the summer of 1926, it was first published in Weird Tales, February 1928. It is the only story written by Lovecraft in which the extraterrestrial entity Cthulhu himself makes a major appearance. It is written in a documentary style, with three independent narratives linked together by the device of a narrator discovering notes left by a deceased relative.

Mysteries come in all sorts, and this collection of seven short stories reflects that, from hidden temples beneath the sea, to worlds discovered through a microscope. "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" is a short story from 1919 based on the innovative (at that time) idea of using psychology for explaining real-life issues. Incidentally, a near namesake song ("Behind the Wall of Sleep") appeared on the debut album of Black Sabbath. The second story, "From Beyond" (written in 1920, published in 1934), hovers around the theme of a mad scientist willing to peek beyond reality. It inspired a few films, songs by death-metal bands, and it even features in the PC game, "Half-Life". The last story of the trio is "The Transition of Juan Romero", from 1919. The feature "character" is a mysterious evil encountered in an ancient ritual to the Mexican deity, Huitzilopochtli.

The pioneer of modern-era horror stories, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, meets one of his "gurus" - Edgar Allan Poe (Lovecraft himself is sometimes referred to as E. A. Poe's direct successor). "William Wilson" is a typical specimen of Poe’s fantastic, even mystic style that won him world renown. H. P. Lovecraft is also the author of the other two short stories - "The Terrible Old Man" and "Ex Oblivione". Curiously enough, Lovecraft's name now defines one of the subgenres of horror literature (the fear of the unknown, as opposed to a bloodbath).

Howard's story called The Black Stone, making this story an essential for fans of Lovecraft and his Cthulhu mythos.

The Call of Cthulhu is one of H. P. Lovecraft's best-known short stories. Celaphais tells the story of a man who is the sole survivor of his family and just a nameless face among the other inhabitants of London. Depressed and fed up with life, he begins to favor the alternate reality he discovers while dreaming and even creates a new identity for himself, Kuranes. While "living" as Kuranes, he discovers his dream utopia of Celaphais in the Valley of Ooth-Nargai. Much to his disappointment, Kuranes is continually pulled away from Celaphais and begins to try harder and harder to find it again and live there forever.

Confined within a castle, unable to remember much about his past and longing to explore the world outside, a man undertakes an odyssey that answers all his questions in a most horrific way.

Although he was not famous during his lifetime, his work is now considered a classic of literature.
