Samt eines kühlen Lufthauchs trat eine Gestalt in einem roten Umhang ein. Sie streifte sich die Kapuze vom Kopf und zum Vorschein kam ein etwa sechzehnjähriges Mädchen. In gewisser Weise wirkte sie wie eine ältere und taffere Version von Rotkäppchen, nur dass sie außer eines Korbes mit Wein und Kuchen auch noch eine große, scharfe Sense bei sich trug.

Zwischen all den weißen Schwänen tauchte auf einmal ein schwarzer auf. Sein Gefieder schimmerte beinahe bläulich im silbrigen Mondlicht. Er hatte einen roten Schnabel und ebenso rot glühende Augen, die er nun auf mich richtete, als würde er mich kennen. Sein Anblick verursachte mir eine Gänsehaut. "Warum ist dieser Schwan schwarz?", wandte ich mich an Baba Zima. "Er symbolisiert das Böse, welches du in dir trägst", antwortete sie mir mit rauer Stimme.
