Le commandant Genestas qui a combattu auprès de Napoléon, désormais en exil, arrive dans un village du Dauphiné près de Grenoble. Là, il rencontre le docteur Benassis, personnage éminent du petit bourg dont il est devenu maire. On apprend qu'en l'espace de dix années, ce médecin a redonné vie et prospérité à cette région, autrefois pauvre et enclavée, peuplée de gens miséreux et superstitieux. Une amitié se noue entre les deux hommes dont le passé cache peut-être quelques zones d'ombre.

Honoré de Balzac uses his classic style of detail to describe a most controversial setting in his novel Le Pere Goriot. The story takes place in Paris just after the fall of Napoleon in 1819. The story focuses on three characters, Rastignac, a student who wants to try and make it big in the capital, Vautrin, an interesting and funny character who is also quite mysterious, and the main character, Goriot, that carries a heavy burden that only a loving parent would endure.

En 1829, par une jolie matinée de printemps, un homme âgé d'environ cinquante ans suivait à cheval un chemin montagneux qui mène à un gros bourg situé près de la Grande-Chartreuse. Cet homme, le commandant Genestas, en recherche un autre : Monsieur Benassis, médecin de campagne et maire de ce bourg. La rencontre a lieu, mais pourquoi le commandant se présente-t-il sous une fausse identité?

Dans le monde fastueux mais impitoyable du Paris post-napoléonien, un jeune homme au bord du désespoir découvre par hasard un objet qui changera son destin à jamais. Raphaël de Valentin, appauvri et désabusé, acquiert un mystérieux morceau de cuir enchanté, la peau d'un âne sauvage, qui exauce tous les souhaits de son propriétaire. Cependant, chaque désir exaucé a un coût terrible : la peau rétrécit, et avec elle, la durée de vie de Raphaël.

Le père d'Eugénie Grandet a été tonnelier. Grâce à un sens aigu des affaires et une grande avarice, il a réussi à faire fortune en profitant des événements de cette époque instable. Autrefois maire de Saumur, il fait maintenant fructifier sa grande fortune tout en faisant croire à sa femme et à sa fille qu'ils ne sont pas bien riches. Les habitants de Saumur, plus au courant de la fortune du père Grandet, voient en sa fille Eugénie le plus beau parti de la ville et la courtisent donc ardemment.

"La femme de trente ans" évoque la condition féminine au travers du récit d'un mariage qui échoue. Julie de Chastillon est une jeune femme poussée trop vite dans le mariage et en quête permanente d'une rencontre amoureuse digne d'être vécue, elle devient adultère. Entre les déceptions dans l'intimité conjugale et le devoir de garder les apparences en société, Balzac nous fait le récit parfaitement réaliste d'une jeune femme "à qui le mariage ne [...] réussit point".

Rastignac, resté seul, fit quelques pas vers le haut du cimetière et vit Paris tortueusement couché le long des deux rives de la Seine où commençaient à briller les lumières. Ses yeux s'attachèrent presque avidement entre la colonne Vendôme et le dôme des Invalides, là où vivait ce beau monde dans lequel il avait voulu pénétrer. Il lança sur cette ruche bourdonnante un regard qui semblait par avance pomper le miel, et dit ces mots grandioses : "À nous deux maintenant !"

Ce roman fait partie des "Scènes de la vie parisienne" dans la section "Les Parents pauvres" tout comme "La Cousine Bette". Pons, musicien sans fortune, bon et naïf, est traité en parent pauvre par sa riche famille, les Camusot de Marville. Le jour où ils découvrent que la collection d'objets d'art qu'il a accumulée est d'une immense valeur, ils le dépouillent et le font mourir.

"Le Curé de village" a pour personnage principale une femme, Véronique, une auvergnate dont la destinée aurait pu être banale. L'intrique se situe à Limoges où elle épouse un banquier venu de Paris grâce à la dote confortable que son père, ancien ferrailleur économe, a promis à ce dernier. Le couple est mal assorti mais la jeune femme finit par se lier avec la bonne société de la ville et à en être appréciée. C'est alors qu'un fait divers défraie la chronique et met en émoi toute la région.
