The Challenge continues, and there is no end in sight to the bloodletting. It doesn't matter whether you are a "Brahmin" or a disenfranchised piece of meat, a popular top dog or the lowliest loser. You still don't know squat, and if anything, the questions just keep piling up. Yet, the new tier is also different, at least for some. You can go hard, or go easy, but the harder the going, the higher the loot. If you are lucky, you may even get a respite from feeding on your own kind. Instead, you'll be eating right. But don't rejoice finding yourself all alone on a deserted shore.

So you want a brilliant cut for your rough diamond? In that case, you should get on with the cutting! That’s how I found myself looking for a suitable lapidarist. Since I was anything but your run-of-the-mill little rock, the master crafter also had to be special. The one fitting the bill happened to be truly excellent, but, alas, he did have his quirks, too. A recluse living on top of a tall, barren mountain, he did not take kindly to most uninvited intruders, sending them back rolling down the hill in the most unceremonious of manners. And he had plenty of secrets, too.

Rumor has it that this year's leaders will receive an unusual reward from the Emperor himself. The exact nature of that reward is a mystery to everyone. What is absolutely clear, though, is that the number of prizes is limited, and just about everyone wants them. So let the battle begin—in the hearts and minds, within the school walls, on training grounds, and even in the streets of the capital city. This will be the ultimate test of one's strength and cunning. It will be fair, and not. It will be bloodless and the stuff of one's worst gory nightmares. And the winner will take all.

 Welcome to the challenge. You're an absolute nobody here - nothing; a zero; a useless lump of meat filled with bones. You're but a delicious morsel for your antagonists and those who got lucky at the start. The only goal you can have in your miserable existence is to kick the bucket as soon as possible.

Where our hero is going this time is the exact opposite of the above—a slum of a city in the middle of a dry, inhospitable desert, pervasive corruption, and all kinds of formidable enemies.

It started with a girl. Her father, as it turned out, was a barbaric maniac. Decades into the 21st century, the madman seemed terribly out of place. Yet he was also a powerful mogul - and determined to turn the life of every man who had ever been romantically involved with his daughter into a particular variant of hell only made possible by the latest VR technology. All 17 of his girl's former lovers would suffer in virtual reality until they snapped. For the first 16, the project succeeded. But the 17th was different. The 17th was Dark.

Wen es durch eine Laune des Schicksals dorthin verschlägt, der ist endgültig verloren–es sei denn natürlich, er ist ein großer Held.

Willkommen beim Trial. Hier bist du niemand. Du bist nichts. Eine Null, ein nichtsnutziges Stück Fleisch mit Knochen. Ein schmackhafter Happen für deine Gegenspieler und für die, die beim Start Glück hatten. Futter. Der einzige Sinn deiner jämmerlichen Existenz ist, möglichst schnell zu verrecken.

Ich bin der, den es nicht geben dürfte. Meinesgleichen wird normalerweise tot geboren oder–wenn es gut läuft–sterben wir noch als Säuglinge. Wer sich nicht entwickeln kann, stirbt. Es ist eine simple Sache. Kein Kind der Leere hat jemals das erste Jahr überlebt. Nur ich habe es bis zum dreizehnten geschafft, und fragt nicht, wie. Elende dreizehn Jahre einer jämmerlichen Existenz. Alles, was ich in der Zeit tun konnte, war mich mit unendlicher Anstrengung zu bewegen. Und selbst das nicht immer. Für jede Minute meines Lebens musste der Clan tief in die Tasche greifen.

Ein abgegrenztes Gebiet, aus dem kein Entkommen möglich scheint und das auf spezielle Art vermint ist. Verflixt gefährliche Kreaturen, die ihre Ziele noch auf Wolkenkratzerdächern und tief unter der Erde zur Strecke bringen können. Eine Menge verträumter Statisten, die vielleicht helfen, vielleicht angreifen, je nach Laune. Spezielle Feinde mit extravaganten Waffen und effektiven Scannern – während man sich schnell Strafen einhandeln kann, die einen überall und in jeder Tarnung verraten.

Der Trial geht weiter und wer hinter dem endlosen Blutvergießen steht, ist immer noch ein Rätsel. Es spielt keine Rolle, ob du einer Kaste angehörst und Privilegien genießt oder ein vogelfreies Stück Fleisch bist, ein berühmt-berüchtigter Top Star, dessen Foto alle Welt kommentiert, oder der letzte Loser – niemand hat eine Ahnung, und mit jeder Erkenntnis tun sich nur neue Fragen auf. Vor dem Start auf der neuen Ebene hast du eine Wahl. Je härter die Gangart, die du wählst, desto schöner die Preise, die dir winken.

Die Wüste hat Sünder hinter sich gelassen, aber erbarmungslose Härten und Prüfungen pflastern weiter seinen Weg. Er sitzt in der Falle – in derselben wie alle, die es nicht schnell genug zum nördlichen Rand der Ebene geschafft haben. Er hat die Wahl: Entweder klein beigeben, sich in sein Schicksal fügen und mit den anderen Unglücklichen sterben – oder sich befreien, und seine Freunde gleich mit ihm. Aber es wird ein harter Kampf. Und um sich und die anderen zu retten, muss er gegen das grausamste aller Raubtiere bestehen. Den Menschen.

Er sollte das Schicksal all derer teilen, die nur Futter waren, das denen zum Fraß vorgeworfen wurde, die mehr Glück hatten. Aber sei gewarnt, Privilegierter: Er ist ein ganz besonderes Futter – von der Sorte, die zurückbeißt. Die euch frisst. Überlege dir gut, ob du immer noch Lust hast, ihn zu jagen. Und wenn ja, dann mache dir nicht die Mühe, zu rennen. Er wird von selbst zu dir kommen und dich holen.
