Le père Maurice conseille à son beau-fils, Germain, veuf de 28 ans, de se remarier avec une veuve d'un village voisin. Lors du trajet pour aller la rencontrer, Germain se perd dans une forêt et trouve un endroit où se poser pour la nuit, la "Mare au diable", avec son fils, le petit Pierre, et Marie, une jeune fille de 16 ans douce et belle qui part travailler comme bergère. Il tombe amoureux de la jeune bergère, qui le repousse à cause de son âge.

Dans la lignée des romans inspirés du monde paysan, "La mare au diable" est le parcours de Germain et Marie qui, déçus par les choix qu'ils ont faits, retournent dans leur village où ils s'avouent leurs sentiments. C'est un roman champêtre et social par l'intermédiaire duquel George Sand exalte l'amour de son Berry natal et son idéal de réconciliation des classes à travers la peinture du milieu paysan dont elle décrit la noblesse et les valeurs, face à une société capitaliste pervertie.

George Sand et Victor Hugo étaient exactement contemporains et pourtant ils ne se sont jamais rencontrés. Il faudra même attendre l'année 1856 pour qu'ils entament une relation épistolaire. On connaissait depuis longtemps la magnifique correspondance entre Sand et Flaubert.
