Svält, som bygger på Hamsuns egna erfarenheter, beskriver en spirande författares sorgliga livsförhållanden, när han driver runt i Christiania och konstant kämpar för att skaffa sig det mest nödvändiga för att kunna hålla sig vid liv. Ofta får han inte mat på flera dagar, och han får då nöja sig med att tugga på ett träspån, vilket leder till att han får våldsamma humörsvängningar och hallucinationer, som hämmar hans produktivitet.
