John Owen (1616 - 1683) was vice chancellor of Oxford University and served as advisor to Oliver Cromwell. The Death of Death in the Death of Christ is a polemical work, attempting to prove, among other things, that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural. It is divided into four parts. The first sets forth his thesis that the work of Christ on the cross was made for the full and complete salvation of those whom God intended to save.

The first moment of death, and the day of judgment will be the most dreadful for those who allow sin to go unrepented.

There are certain elements of piety that are common among all Christians. They dedicate theirselves to the Lord, have good will toward all men, to name a few. But to truly be pious, one must spread the word of God to nonbelievers.

He states that, as far as reason can lead us, we seem to be shut out from all fellowship with our Maker, and whether prayer is permitted would remain forever doubtful, were it not for divine revelation. Sermons on Gospel Themes is a collection of his sermons, including 24 delivered at Oberlin College between 1844 and 1861. They were taken down in shorthand while Finney preached them, and submitted to him for correction or addition.

Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889) was a biblical scholar who converted from Judaism to Christianity and wrote popular books like The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, The Temple: Its Ministry and Services, and Bible History Old Testament. In this extensive work, Edersheim examines the Messianic prophecies in the Jewish scripture from the Christian perspective. Through the 12 chapters of the book, he argues that Jesus Christ fulfilled the Messianic hopes of many of the Old Testament prophecies.
