Although their budget cannot stretch to this, Mathilde is able to borrow a diamond necklace from an old schoolfriend who is wealthy. But while she dazzles everyone at the ball, disaster is waiting in the wings...

Este relato esta compuesto por elementos antagónicos. Cargado de colores y vida para las descripciones de los paisajes y personajes secundarios, se torna casi cruel a la hora de referirse a Harriet. Descrito con los ojos de un pintor se nos presenta a un personaje frío, gris, inglés, en contraposición al pintor Chenal quien desde el inicio del relato de su historia de amor es presentado como cándido, lleno de vida, alguien que disfruta de la vida.

A gruesome story of obsessive love and terrible madness set in 19th century New England. One dark night, a cemetery caretaker is awakened by the barking of his dog. Investigating, the caretaker comes upon a scene of abject horror: a dimly lit figure is pulling the corpse of a young woman from an open grave.
