Seit unzähligen Monden lebt ein Katzenstamm in den Bergen. Die Nahrung ist rar, die Winter lang und kalt. Halber Mond, die weise, alte Sagerin, hat eine Vision von einem besseren Ort, wo es genug Beute für alle gibt. Eine Gruppe mutiger Katzen bricht auf zu einer gefährlichen Reise in das unbekannte Land. Grauer Flug ist gegen die gefährliche Mission, doch als sein kleiner Bruder Zackiger Berg verschwindet, ist auch er gezwungen, die Berge zu verlassen. Ein Abenteuer voller unbekannter Gefahren, über Freundschaft, Liebe und Loyalität.

Grauer Flug steht unter Schock. Er hat immer fest daran geglaubt, dass Wald- und Moorkatzen in Frieden zusammenleben können. Doch nun wird sein Bruder Wolkenhimmel tatsächlich den Moorkatzen den Krieg erklären? Auch der junge Kater Donner lehnt das skrupellose Verhalten von Wolkenhimmel ab und kehrt kurzentschlossen zu den Moorkatzen zurück. Grauer Flug ist sich nun sicher: Er muss Wolkenhimmel aufsuchen, um Schlimmeres zu verhindern. Doch was als Missverständnis zwischen den beiden Brüdern beginnt, endet in einer Katastrophe.

Nach mondelangen Auseinandersetzungen haben sich die Katzen in fünf Lager aufgeteilt. Das neue Bündnis wird auf eine harte Probe gestellt, als der gefährliche Streuner Schlitzer eine Kätzin aus dem Waldlager entführt. Wolkenhimmel versucht verzweifelt, die Gefangene aus den Klauen des brutalen Streuners Schlitzer zu befreien. Doch dafür braucht er die Hilfe der Anführer aus den anderen Lagern. Großer Schatten, Windläufer, Donner und Strömender Fluss wollen Wolkenhimmel zunächst nicht unterstützen - denn Schlitzer stellt immer dreistere Forderungen.

Nach der großen Schlacht an den vier Eichen sind die Wald- und Moorkatzen tief erschüttert und entscheiden, die Lagergrenzen aufzuheben. Grauer Flug fällt es schwer, an ein friedliches Zusammenleben mit Wolkenhimmel zu glauben. Als plötzlich eine verheerende Krankheit in beiden Lagern ausbricht, sind die Katzen völlig hilflos. Bis sie begreifen, dass sie nur überleben können, wenn sie zusammenhalten. Als sie eine mysteriöse Nachricht ihrer Kriegerahnen erhalten, gibt es Hoffnung: Sie müssen wachsen und sich ausbreiten wie der Leuchtende Stern.

Ein Familiendrama und epische Kämpfe: Der junge Kater Donner steht zwischen den Fronten. Die Katzen haben endlich eine neue Heimat gefunden. Doch das Zerwürfnis der Brüder Wolkenhimmel und Grauer Flug hat die Gruppe in zwei feindliche Lager gespalten. Wolkenhimmel verstößt sogar seinen eigenen Sohn Donner, der nun ausgerechnet bei Grauer Flug im Moor aufwächst.

Die Blattleere bedroht die Katzen mit Hunger und Kälte. Wolkenhimmel erkennt, dass sich alle Katzen verbünden müssen, um sich vor feindlichen Angriffen zu schützen - und um wachsen zu können, wie die Geisterkatzen es vorausgesagt haben. Aber nur wenige sind bereit, sich wieder mit ihm einzulassen. Für Großer Schatten steht fest, dass sie ihr eigenes Lager im Kiefernwald gründen wird, und Strömender Fluss fühlt sich in der Nähe des Wassers besonders wohl. Die Streunerin Windläufer hat sich mit ihrer Familie im Moor niedergelassen.
