Romanzo pubblicato nel 1867 e dedicato a tutti gli amanti delle avventure e delle esplorazioni geografiche. Seguendo alcune indicazioni di una richiesta di aiuto, trovata in una bottiglia, un gruppo di coraggiosi si pone in cerca del capitano Harry Grant, andando n cerca di mirabolanti avventure, che hanno come sfondo la Patagonia, l’Australia, e i feroci cannibali Maori della Nuova Zelanda, fino all’immancabile e sfolgorante lieto fine. Grandi descrizioni geografiche, il libro è avvincente e istruttivo. Adatto a tutti.

Questo libro appartiene a quel genere di romanzi di Verne che, più che libri di fantascienza,sono taccuini di viaggio. Una trama avventurosa (si parla di caccia alla tigre, di una vendetta all'ultimo sangue fra un indiano e un inglese) fa da trait d'union al vero protagonista del libro, che è il viaggio nellIndia del nord, partendo da Calcutta ed arrivando alle pendici dell'Himalaya. Il tutto a bordo di una fantastica casa a vapore a forma di elefante! La storia della sanguinosa insurrezione dei Cipay è il presupposto da cui si sviluppa la trama....
