Una giovane, attraente donna è morta, uccisa con un colpo di pistola esploso attraverso la finestra del soggiorno di casa sua, una delle poche costruzioni di un breve viale in cui i vicini si conoscono tutti e sanno tutto di tutti. Due indizi instradano inizialmente l'ispettore capo Morse: un criptico messaggio che cela data, ora e luogo di un appuntamento, e una foto con uno sconosciuto dai capelli grigi. Un terzo indizio che si aggiunge in seguito appare più promettente: un possibile errore di percorso dell'assassino.

Il professor Felix McClure, anziano professore universitario in pensione viene assassinato con un'unica violentissima pugnalata. La totale assenza di indizi non è un ostacolo per il bizzarro ispettore Morse che con il suo solito metodo inizia a congetturare astratte ipotesi una dopo l'altra finché, come sempre, non riuscirà a trovare la pista giusta.
