In this second volume of Dante Alighieri's ageless classic, the *Comedie* (*Commedia*), Vergil and Dante emerge from their upward climb out the lower depths of Hell, at the center of the earth, to find themselves at the shores of the Mountain of Purgatory, exactly opposite Jerusalem in the Hemisphere of Water, where it is the only land below the Equator. Here they encounter other newcome souls and those who are awaiting entry into the punishments.

It is often said that two things are unavoidable: death and taxes. Certainly the latter is a common thorn in adult life, but as to the former it seems that for many people it is merely a hiccup in life’s journey. A journey they wish, if being of good deed and character, to share at the eternity of heaven’s largesse, a reward for faith and the obligations of religion. Of course for those not so fortunate an altogether different experience was prepared for them: hell. Um dos maiores clássicos da literatura universal, A Divina Comédia escrita por Dante Alighieri no século XIV narra a odisseia espiritual do próprio personagem de Dante.

La Divina Comedia es un poema alegórico donde el protagonista encuentra su propia identidad a través de un viaje desde el Infierno hasta el Cielo. La vida real y la sobrenatural se entrelazan mediante la lucha entre el ser y el espíritu. El poema consta de tres partes: Infierno, Purgatorio y Paraíso, donde para alcanzar la felicidad humana y religiosa es preciso seguir un camino que obliga a pasar antes por el rechazo del pecado y la purificación del arrepentimiento.

"Abandon hope all ye who enter here." Dante, our young, naive hero, has woken from a deep sleep to find himself in a cold, dark wood. Before he can begin to work out where he is, his path is blocked by a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf. Things get worse from there, and our pilgrim finds himself on a journey through the very depths of hell. Why is he there, and will he ever make it out alive?

Dante’s Purgatorio follows the pilgrim as he emerges from the grit and grime of Hell, and comes to the shores of sanctification, the mountain where souls are made holy and beautiful. Join Dante as he climbs the various terraces of the mountain; encounter with him the various trials and hardships that refine God’s redeemed, preparing them for glory; learn what it means to hunger for righteousness and to rest in mercy; join the communion of saints who rejoice in their light, momentary afflictions, and find solace in the trials, as they are conformed to the image of their Lord.

In the second book of Dante’s epic poem The Divine Comedy, Dante has left hell and begins the ascent of the mount of purgatory. Just as hell had its circles, purgatory, situated at the threshold of heaven, has its terraces, each representing one of the seven mortal sins. With Virgil again as his guide, Dante climbs the mountain; the poet shows us, on its slopes, those whose lives were variously governed by pride, envy, wrath, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust.

Purgatory is the second part of Dante's The Divine Comedy. The listener finds the Poet, with his guide Virgil, ascending the terraces of the Mount of Purgatory inhabited by those doing penance to expiate their sins on earth. There are the proud - forced to circle their terrace for eons bent double in humility; the slothful running around crying out examples of zeal and sloth; while the lustful are purged by fire.

Dante's Paradise is the third of the three cantos of the Divine Comedy, after Hell and Purgatory. Hell and purgatory are places on Earth, but paradise is a non-material and ethereal place, divided into nine heavens.

Burkhard Wolk legt mit dieser Darbietung auch die erste Gesamteinsprechung der "Göttlichen Komödie" als Hörbuch vor. Wie in der Live-Rezitation wird auch beim Hörbuch der deutsche Wortlaut Karl Wittes verwendet, der der Erhabenheit der Danteschen Dichtung wohl am nahesten ist.
