Mit seiner Rede „Zum Shakespeares Tag" würdigt Johann Wolfgang von Goethe das Genie William Shakespeares – als Dichter, Dramatiker und Vorbild. Goethe schildert eindrucksvoll, wie Shakespeares Werke sein eigenes Denken, Schreiben und Weltverständnis geprägt haben. Sie ist auch gewitzt genug, an entscheidenden Stellen dem Teufel ordentlich Kontra zu geben.

Unter dem Begriff Urfaust versteht man Goethes ersten Entwurf für sein Literaturwerk Faust. Er entstand in den Jahren zwischen 1772 und 1775, parallel mit Die Leiden des jungen Werthers in Frankfurt am Main. Goethes Arbeitsprozess am Urfaust ist nicht mehr zu rekonstruieren. Auslöser für die Entwicklung des Urfausts war die Verurteilung und Hinrichtung der Kindesmörderin Susanna Margaretha Brandt. Vermutlich verfolgte Goethe den gesamten Prozess, da nach seinem Tod in seinem Haus Abschriften von Prozessakten gefunden wurden. Es existiert nur eine einzige Abschrift des Urfaust vom Hoffräulein Luise von Göchhausen.

Vom frühen Welterfolg des "Werther" bis zu den nach dem Tode veröffentlichten "Maximen und Reflexionen" bietet das Hörbuch einen wunderbaren Querschnitt durch alle Phasen und Genres, an denen sich das Universalgenie Goethe versucht hat.

J. W. von Goethe legte diesem Schauspiel die 1785 in Rom erschienene Tasso-Biographie von Abbate Serassi zugrunde. Das problematische Verhältnis des Dichters zur Gesellschaft wird für die Handlung hier wichtiger als die legendäre Liebesbeziehung des Dichters zu einer Prinzessin.

Story is the narrative of a princess, whose husband has gone out hunting. She is inspired by her uncle showing her paintings of a nearby ruined castle which has become overgrown with trees to ask him to take her there on their afternoon ride. On the way, they pass through the busy market and see that there is a showman exhibiting a range of wild beasts. When they reach the base of the castle, they have a fine view back towards their own castle and the town beneath it, but they quickly spot that something is wrong. A fire has broken out in the marketplace.
