Job is what everyone would consider a “good” person. So why are so many terrible things happening to him? The real question may be: Why does Job continue to give praise to God in the midst of his terrible circumstances? Although he laments and suffers, Job ultimately understands that God is good and is worth praising no matter what.

The book of Psalms is filled with sad songs of lamentation, raw prayers pleading for mercy, poetry about the work and nature of God, and beautiful hymns of praise. Many believers have found these prayers of Israel to be a source of comfort and hope and especially helpful in their own prayer lives. Although this is Israel’s book of prayers, it is also an enduring prayer book for God’s people forever. Listen to the Psalms and be astounded by each poem’s relevancy to your own life.

It is not known who wrote the Book of Job or when it was written. It is written poetically and is considered wisdom literature. The book starts with a dialogue between God and Satan. God first brings up Job and how noble and pious he is, then Satan contends that it is so because of the wealth and comfort which God has bestowed upon him. God allows Satan to inflict suffering upon Job. As a consequence, Job loses all his wealth, his children die, and he contracts disease.

Ecclesiastes reminds us of the transitory nature of life and ponders its meaning. Many familiar phrases and passages are found in it -- the most well known perhaps "To everything there is a season..." In fact, many book titles are taken from Ecclesiastes: John Grisham's "A Time to Kill", Ernest Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises", Henry James' "The Golden Bowl", Edith Wharton's "The House of Mirth", and James Agee's "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men".

The Book of Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, is Judaism's account of the creation of the world and the origins of the Jewish people. It is divisible into two parts, the primeval history (chapters 1–11) and the ancestral history (chapters 12–50).

The Book of Daniel records events that took place during Israel's captivity. Daniels visions always show God as triumphant. Now those mortar rounds were erupting like little volcanoes. But instead of hot lava rocks, they were hot pieces of shrapnel that whizzed by us in every direction.
