La seconda parte del primo volume, intitolata Un amore di Swann (Un amour de Swann), rappresenta un punto di svolta, l'andamento della vicenda si fa più veloce e intrigante, diventando quasi una sorta di "romanzo nel romanzo".

Ed è qui che il Narratore scopre il mondo di Sodoma e Gomorra, che come una lente, un nuovo colore, arricchisce di sfumature il vasto affresco mondano della soirée dai Guermantes; fa emergere la figura del barone di Charlus, che già nelle prime pagine, in una memorabile scena botanica, viene presentato come il “provvidenziale calabrone” pronto a posarsi sull'orchidea, il farsettaio Jupien.
