Vigilia di Capodanno, 1932. Hercule Poirot e il suo fidato amico e compagno d'indagini, l'ispettore Edward Catchpool, arrivano sulla piccola isola greca di Lamperos per festeggiare la fine dell'anno. La location scelta per l'evento è la Spitty, "la Casa dell'eterno benvenuto", uno storico edificio vista mare, solido e imponente nonostante il suo aspetto un po' bizzarro. Catchpool, però, inizia presto a sospettare che Poirot lo abbia portato lì per una ragione ben diversa, qualcosa che non vuole rivelare.
