William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. His most popular works in the early part of the last century were his humorous tales set around the docks of Wapping and in the taproom of the infamous Cauliflower tavern. Many of his stories were written in a cockney vernacular and were keenly observant of character. A slightly unsettling story of an elderly couple who find themselves in the possession of an enchanted Monkey's Paw that allows the owner three wishes. While this seems either a boon or a dash of nonsense to the couple they ultimately make their first wish. The result was perfectly aligned with their request, but the cost related to the answer was more than they bargained for. A classic cautionary tale about the unintended consequences of always getting what you want and the new chain of events that follow.

An elderly couple living in a remote village with their mischievous sons Herbert are presented with a macabre souvenir from India: a withered monkey's paw. Upon receiving this strange gift, the couple are warned of its dangers - that though it has the power to grant wishes, it exacts a terrible price for them. Disbelieving such fanciful ideas, the old man makes a wish that brings the most terrible events imaginable into their lives.
