Auf dem Heimweg sieht er eine alte Dame tot in der Bahn sitzen, ihr Körper weist Messerstiche auf. Zusammen mit seiner Chefin Vera Stanhope macht er sich auf den Weg nach Northumberland in das kleine Städtchen Mardle, wo die Tote lebte. Die Ermittlungen dort stellen sie vor ein Rätsel. Als eine zweite Leiche gefunden wird, führen auch hier die Spuren zu der kleinen Pension "Harbour Street".
