"Viaggio in Italia" è il resoconto di viaggio del Grand Tour che Johann Wolfgang von Goethe compì in Italia in circa due anni, a partire dal settembre del 1786. Wilhelm übergibt einem Verleger in Leipzig die Briefe seines Freundes Werther. Gemeinsam lesen sie: Auf einem Ball lernt Werther die junge Lotte, Tochter des Amtmanns, kennen. Er wird ständiger Gast in ihrem Haus und ein Freund der Familie. Seine Liebe zu Lotte ist hoffnungslos, denn sie ist mit Albert verlobt, einem Mann, der ihr eine gesicherte Zukunft garantiert. Werther dagegen ist ein Schwärmer, der gegen die gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse aufbegehrt. Er trennt sich von Lotte, nimmt eine Arbeit in der Kanzlei eines Gesandten auf. Die Unerträglichkeit der Arbeit und die Brüskierung durch den Adel lassen ihn fliehen und in die Umgebung von Lotte, die inzwischen mit Albert verheiratet ist, zurückkehren.

Story is the narrative of a princess, whose husband has gone out hunting. She is inspired by her uncle showing her paintings of a nearby ruined castle which has become overgrown with trees to ask him to take her there on their afternoon ride. On the way, they pass through the busy market and see that there is a showman exhibiting a range of wild beasts. When they reach the base of the castle, they have a fine view back towards their own castle and the town beneath it, but they quickly spot that something is wrong.
