On the seventh day of Ielool (“the month of reaping”), Almustafa climbs a hill beyond the boundaries of the city wall and gazes out across the misty sea. He is filled with joy as he catches sight of the ship that has come to free him from exile. His series of sermons form the 28 prose poems of this book.

Twelve years - that's how long the prophet Almustafa has been waiting for the ship that is to take him back home. The people of the City of Orphalese ask him to tell them about his insights regarding human life: work, love, death, for example. In the ensuing 26 speeches, he does just that. Ever since its first publication in 1923, millions of copies of "The Prophet" were sold, making it one of the best sellers in spiritual literature.
