Der junge und talentierte aber erfolglose Maler Andrej Petrowitsch Tschartkow erwirbt in einer kleinen Kunsthandlung das Porträt eines alten Mannes für einen Spottpreis. Besonders die ausdrucksstarke Malweise der Augen des Porträts zieht in magisch an. Nachts erwacht er in seiner ärmlichen Behausung und erblickt plötzlich in Papier zusammengerollte Golddukaten, die von dem Dargestellten des Porträts zu stammen scheinen. Zuerst hält er es für einen Traum, dann entdeckt er ein Versteck im Rahmen des Bildes mit eben diesen Dukaten.

Eines Morgens findet der Barbier Iwan Jakowlewitsch eine Nase in seinem Frühstücksbrot. Sie gehört dem Kollegienassessor Kowaljow, der von nun an ohne das gute Stück in seinem Gesicht auskommen muss. Denn die Nase wandelt als eigenständiges Wesen durch St. Petersburg und hat überhaupt kein Interesse, zu seinem ursprünglichen Besitzer zurückzukehren. Die fantastische Erzählung gehört zu Gogols "Petersburger Novellen". In ihr vermischen sich wie selbstverständlich absurde Elemente mit der Realität.
