Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts: Auf der Suche nach Arbeit verschlägt es den jungen Maschinisten Etienne Lantier in eine Bergarbeitersiedlung im Norden Frankreichs. Entsetzt über das dort herrschende Elend und die unmenschlichen Arbeitsbedingungen ruft der überzeugte Sozialist seine Leidensgenossen zum Aufstand auf. Zunächst scheint ihr Streik von Erfolg gekrönt, doch schon bald geraten die Bergarbeiter in eine verhängnisvolle Spirale aus Verzweiflung, Sabotage und Verrat.

Ce recueil dresse la chronologie de l'Affaire et rappelle la férocité de cette lutte pour la vérité et la justice commencée le 25 novembre 1897 avec son premier article en faveur de Dreyfus, jusqu'à sa dernière lettre au président de la République le 22 décembre 1900. À cette date, Dreyfus n'a pas été réhabilité et Zola ne peut l'accepter.

L'affresco orchestrato da Zola si basa, come sempre nello scrittore francese, su un lungo lavoro preparatorio fatto di interviste a prostitute vere e racconti di amici ben introdotti nell'ambiente galante. Pubblicato nel 1880, il romanzo riesce a descrivere dall'interno la vita del Secondo impero e il suo sistema dei valori.

Luego de que un corrupto consejo de guerra condenó por traición al inocente capitán Dreyfus, Émile Zola respondió con la única arma que tiene un intelectual: la pluma y la verdad. Su violento ¡Yo acuso! le valió la condena a un año de prisión y repetidas amenazas de muerte. ¡Yo acuso! te llevará a través de los laberintos de la intriga y la conspiración, mientras Zola pone en juego su propia vida para luchar por la inocencia de Dreyfus. L’Œuvre est un roman d’Émile Zola publié en 1886, le quatorzième volume de la série Les Rougon-Macquart. L’ouvrage décrit le monde de l’art et des artistes dans les années 1860-1870, à travers le portrait d’un artiste peintre, Claude Lantier. Claude Lantier est le fils de Gervaise Macquart et d’Auguste Lantier. Il est ici l’ami d’enfance du romancier Pierre Sandoz, personnage dans lequel Zola a mis beaucoup de lui-même.

Gervaise Macquart runs away to Paris with Lantier, to work as a washerwoman. Lantier abandons her and their two sons. She then marries the roofer Coupeau, and has a daughter, nicknamed Nana.
