Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife. Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles.

Published on June 20, 1916, with full-color and black-and-white illustrations by artist John R. Neill, it is significant that no one from Oz appears in the book until its climax; this is due to Baum's having originally written most of the book as an original fantasy novel over ten years earlier, in 1905. Most of the action takes place on three islands - Pingaree, Regos, and Coregos - and within the Nome King's caverns.

The Emerald City of Oz is the sixth Oz book. In this book, Dorothy and the Wizard take Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a tour of Oz. During their journey they encounter such amazing and amusing people as King Kleaver with his Spoon Brigade and Miss Cuttenclip of the land of paper dolls. Cap'n Bill and Trot journey to Oz and, with the help of the Scarecrow, the former ruler of Oz, overthrow the villainous King Krewl of Jinxland. Cap'n Bill and Trot had previously appeared in two other novels by Baum, The Sea Fairies and Sky Island. Based in part upon the 1914 silent film, His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz. This was allegedly L. Frank Baum's personal favourite Oz book.

A young Munchkin boy, Kiki Aru, discovers a forbidden magical word in his father's laboratory while exploring one day and gets himself into a world of trouble. Since Princess Ozma had decreed that magic was forbidden to be practice by anyone except Glinda the Good Witch, Oz has been lacking in magical adventures and Kiki quickly changes that. Kiki uses the magic word, "pyrzqxgl", to transform himself and others into animals, including an exiled Nome, Ruggedo. Ruggedo and Kiki plan an invasion of Oz, changing people to animals and vice versa to get their way. It falls into the hands of the Wizard to start changing things back to normal, with Dorothy there to assist him.

Professor Wogglebug gets the characters of Oz thinking about their genealogy and where they came from because he wants to write The Royal Book of Oz recording all this information. This topic especially upsets the Scarecrow, as he knows that he was discovered by Dorothy hanging from a beanpole in a cornfield and he thinks that this mean he can't possibly have a family history. Woggleburg agrees and hurts Scarecrow's feelings by noting that because of Dorothy's discovery, Scarecrow has no family tree and should get the slightest mention in their Royal Book of Oz.
