Jonathan Swift almost defines satire in his biting and brutal pamphlet in which he suggests that poor (Catholic) Irish families should fatten up their children and sell them to the rich (Protestant) land owners, thus solving the twin problems of starving children and poverty in one blow. When the "Proposal" was published in 1729, Swift was quickly attacked, and even accused of barbarity - the exact state the "Proposal" was written to expose.

"Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift is a wild series of adventures widely acclaimed as "universally read" and highly influential. After a shipwreck, an Englishman discovers new, strange lands, and learns of the customs and governments of their inhabitants. This is an opportunity both for absurd humor and political satire, and the story of Lilliput may be the best example of Swift's imagination and wit. Gulliver finds himself a prisoner of a race of tiny people, the Lilliputians; they are no more than 6 inches tall, and he appears a giant to them. Soon afterwards, the spectacular giant becomes a favorite of the court, and is given a good view of the politics of the kingdom.

The full title of Swift's pamphlet is A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People from Being a Burtden to their Parents, or the Country, and for Making them Beneficial to the Publick."The tract is an ironically conceived attempt to "find out a fair, cheap, and easy Method" for converting the starving children of Ireland into "sound and useful members of the Commonwealth." Across the country poor children, predominantly Catholics, are living in squalor because their families are too poor to keep them fed and clothed.

Die Insel, auf die er sich rettet, wird von Riesen bewohnt und wieder gibt es viele Abenteuer zu bestehen.

Der Schiffsarzt Lemuel Gulliver schildert seine Erlebnisse auf vier Reisen Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts. Auf diesen Reisen machte er zunächst auf der Insel Liliput die Bekanntschaft der winzigen Einwohner, den Liliputanern. Diesen kann er unter anderem dadurch behilflich sein, dass er eine Feuersbrunst durch einfaches Pinkeln zum Erlöschen bringt.

Gulliver wird bei einem Schiffbruch an den Strand von Liliput gespült. Als er den kleinen Leuten bei einem Brand beisteht, wird er dafür hoch geehrt. Die Bewohner drängen ihn, für immer zu bleiben, doch Gulliver hat Heimweh. Er flieht in einem Boot und gerät in das Land der Riesen.

Gulliver sticht mit seiner Besatzung in Richtung Australien in See. Nachdem Festland in Sicht war, wurden Beiboote ausgesetzt um Wasser zu suchen. Plötzlich sind seine Leute in heller Aufregung und verlassen fluchtartig die Insel, da ihnen ein Riese auf der Spur war. Er wird am Ufer mit seinem Hund Frido zurückgelassen. Der Riese steckte Gulliver und Frido in seine Jackentasche und trug sie zu seinem Haus. Gulliver war im Königreich Monstrosia gelandet.

Gulliver träumte schon immer davon Schiffsarzt zu werden. Am 4. Mai 1699 sticht er mit dem Schiff Antilope in See und beginnt eine Reise in die Südsee. Nach einigen Monaten erleidet Gulliver Schiffbruch. Er rettet sich mit seinem Hund Fredo an den Strand von Liliput. Er sah eine winzige Stadt vor sich liegen, die wie ein Spielzeugparadies aussah.

Gulliver begibt sich auf eine Schiffsreise, um die Welt kennenzulernen. Doch nach ein paar Tagen erleidet die Crew Schiffbruch und Gulliver wird an Land gespült. Als er wieder zu sich kommt, muss er feststellen, dass man ihn geknebelt und gefesselt hat. Er ist Gefangener winzig kleiner Menschen, den Liliputanern. Er bietet ihnen an, sie gegen ihre Feinde, die Blefuscu, zu unterstützen und wird alsbald als Held gefeiert. Aber seine Reise ist noch lange nicht zu Ende. Er trifft auf viele andere seltsame Gestalten...

Gulliver enjoys traveling, although it is this love of travel that is his downfall. His adventure sets off in Lilliput, when after a shipwreck, he wakes up, finding himself a prisoner of a race of people one twelfth the size of normal human beings. However, his adventure among the small people does not last long, when he has to escape the city as he is charged with treason.

It might seem an enlightening idea to take stock of good manners from the perspective of centuries past. Classic author Jonathan Swift deftly takes a look at manners and, through satire, finds a way to add humor to the subject of manners during his era.
