Lucy Maud Montgomery (November 30, 1874 - April 24, 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. The book was an immediate success. The title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. Zur Freude von Marilla und Matthew hält Miss Stacy, Annes Lehrerin, den quirligen Rotschopf von Green Gables für geeignet, das Queens College zu besuchen. Leider bedeutet dies, dass Anne einstweilen nach Charlottetown....

Mittlerweile sind die jungen Damen in Pattys Haus in der Spofford Avenue eingezogen und genießen ihre lustige, von Tante Jamesina hingebungsvoll betreute Wohngemeinschaft. Anne, Priscilla, Stella und Philippa sind selig abgesehen von den Sorgen, die ihnen ein räudiger Straßenkater bereitet, der Anne mit seiner Liebe verfolgt.

Auf Green Gables dreht sich alles um Annes Aufbruch nach Kingsport. Sie wird dort gemeinsam mit ihren beiden Schulkameraden Gilbert Blythe und Charlie Sloane das renommierte Redmond College besuchen.

Anne Shirley wird von den meisten Schülern an der Dorfschule von Avonlea angehimmelt. Aber keineswegs alle mögen die neue junge Lehrerin. Der flegelhafte Anthony Pye hat es regelrecht auf Anne abgesehen. An einem kalten Wintermorgen kommt es zu einer sehr hässlichen Szene in der Schule, die keines der Schulkinder von Avonlea je vergessen wird...Anne genießt ihre letzten Ferientage auf Green Gables. Mit Beginn des neuen Schuljahres wird sie die Lehrerstelle an der Dorfschule von Avonlea übernehmen.
