Le agognate vacanze alle Sables d'Olonne hanno preso una piega imprevista per la signora Maigret, ricoverata in clinica per un improvviso attacco di appendicite. Ogni giorno alle 15 il commissario la va a trovare e passa nervosamente il resto delle sue giornate, irritato dall'atmosfera balneare che lo circonda. Finché qualcuno non gli infila in tasca di soppiatto un biglietto anonimo: "Per pietà, chieda di vedere la malata del 15".

Quando un professore francese, in visita nella tranquilla cittadina di Delfzjil, viene accusato di omicidio, Maigret viene inviato in Olanda per investigare. La comunità locale è ben felice di poter scaricare sullo straniero ogni sospetto, ma Maigret scopre ben presto che più di una persona potrebbe avere avuto un buon movente: la giovane amante Beetje, la cognata Any, il giovane studente rivale in amore, e persino la moglie del defunto.

La casa dei Krull è al margine estremo del paese, e loro stessi ne vengono tenuti ai margini. Benché naturalizzati, restano gli stranieri, i diversi. E quando davanti all'emporio viene ripescato il cadavere di una ragazza violentata e uccisa, i sospetti cadono fatalmente su di loro. In un magistrale crescendo di tensione, e con un singolare rovesciamento, vediamo montare l'ostilità della popolazione francese verso la famiglia tedesca, e l'avversione per una minoranza, che rappresenta un perfetto capro espiatorio, degenerare progressivamente in odio e violenza.

Siamo a Batum, sul Mar Nero, nei primi anni di Stalin. Il nuovo console turco entra nel suo ufficio. Dà un’occhiata fuori e vede due persone affacciate alla finestra di fronte. Più tardi vedrà il punto rosso di una sigaretta nel buio di quella finestra. Avverte subito un invincibile disagio, in quella città desolante, dove tutto lo respinge, dove ogni significato è dubbio e sfuggente. E si sente preso in una rete: sguardi, mezze parole, contrattempi, scene intraviste. Continua a guardare le finestre di fronte, con maggiore curiosità di quella che mostrano gli altri a osservare lui.

Er erinnert sich an seine Kindheit, seine Anfänge bei der Polizei und an seine Liebe zu Madame Maigret, die ein gewisser Georges Simenon nicht ganz wirklichkeitsgetreu gezeichnet hat – wie so vieles andere auch… Kommissar Maigret muss einiges zurechtrücken.
