Hector Hugh Munro (18 December 1870 – 14 November 1916), better known by the pen name Saki and also frequently as H. H. Munro, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirize Edwardian society and culture. He is considered a master of the short story, and often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. Influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling, he himself influenced A. A. Milne, Noël Coward and P. G. Wodehouse.

The Pony Engine and the Pacific Express - a wonderful Christmas Story for Children. It was published in Howell's collection, Christmas Every Day and Other Stories Told for Children (1892). This classic short story from William Dean Howells finds a brother and sister fairly demanding their papa to tell them a story. As a long-standing storyteller, papa is reluctant to dream up something new. Little Bun Rabbit is the twenty-second and final tale in L. Frank Baum's 1897 collection Mother Goose in Prose. Dorothy is a farm girl who is allowed to roam the local meadows and woods and play to her heart's content. She has the rare ability to understand and speak the language of the animals. The kind-hearted child makes friends with Bun Rabbit, and learns about his life and experiences. Bun Rabbit once modeled for Santa Claus, so that Santa could make stuffed bunnies for "the babies" to play with.

The story The Little Angel (1899) about a teenager - half-hungry, offended by the whole world "wolf cub". Once on a holiday in a rich house, he saw an angel on a Christmas tree. A toy becomes for him a sign of the "wonderful world where he once lived." She must belong to him! And the boy, who endured a lot, defending his pride, falls to his knees in front of the "unpleasant aunt."
