SOMMAREN 1958 har Dave och Jimmie Robicheaux just slutat skolan. Det är slutet på oskuldens epok - en tid då en rosa Cadillac, en välfylld jukebox och en lyckad fisketur var vägen till lyckan. Då dyker den rödhåriga Ida Durbin upp. En kvinna med tvivelaktig moral, som försvinner lika hastigt som hon kom. Men Jimmie har aldrig glömt sin ungdomsförälskelse.

Här lever polismannen Dave Robicheaux med fru och dotter. Han känner sina hemtrakter väl och medlemmarna i familjen Sonnier. Deras förbindelser med CIA, maffian och Ku Klux Klan är inget han vill rota i.

När två unga morddömda män skall förflyttas lyckas de fly efter att ha dödat två män, varav en polis. En annan polis, Dave, överlever och tar upp jakten på mördarna, varav en är en psykopat som njuter av att döda. Jakten når sin kulmen när Dave lyckats nästla sig in i ett narkotikasyndikat.

Dave Robicheaux sörjer sin mördade hustru. Han slåss mot alkoholbegären och försöker börja leva igen. Egentligen vill han dö, men hans dotter Alafair behöver honom. Långsamt, långsamt börjar såren i själen läkas. Hans stilla vardag förändras abrupt när Dixie Lee söker hjälp. Dixie Lee har blivit ett farligt vittne till ett mord och mördarna är beredda att göra allt för att tysta honom.

En tidigare polis detektiv och Vietnam veteran i New Orleans och en tillfrisknande alkoholist , Dave Robicheaux, lever ett lugnt liv i swamplands i Louisiana med sin fru Annie. Robicheaux lyckas rädda en ensam överlevande, en salvadoransk flicka, som han och Annie snabbt adopterar och heter Alafair.

Han har rodet sig ud i en farefuld romance med sin vicesheriff, Pam Tibbs. Hackberry Holland fungerer som ondskabens magnet i ørkenens grænseland, måske i forsøget på at holde sine egne dæmoner i skak.
