A headless horseman haunts Sleepy Hollow! At least that’s the legend in the tiny village of Tarrytown. But scary stories won’t stop the town’s new schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, from crossing the hollow, especially when the beautiful Katrina lives on the other side.

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is a gothic story by American author Washington Irving, contained in his collection of 34 essays and short stories entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.. Written while Irving was living abroad in Birmingham, England, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was first published in 1820.

The superstitious Ichabod Crane, schoolmaster of Tarrytown, joins in rivalry for the hand of the delectable Katrina Van Tassel, the country belle. But will the powers that lurk in the dark hollow allow him to pursue his quarry unhindered? Or does the infamously renowned Galloping Hessian of the Hollow have another judgment to lay upon Ichabod?

Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher, came to Tarry Town in the glen of Sleepy Hollow to ply his trade in educating young minds. He was a gullible and excitable fellow, often so terrified by locals' stories of ghosts that he would hurry through the woods on his way home, singing to keep from hysterics. Until late one night, he finds that maybe they're not just stories. What is that dark, menacing figure riding behind him on a horse? And what does it have in its hands? And why wasn't schoolteacher Crane ever seen in Sleepy Hollow again?

Wouter van Twiller appears in A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty by Diedrich Knickerbocker, a satirical history by Washington Irving published in 1809. The putative narrator offers a history of New Netherlands, often ignoring or altering facts. Descriptions of the founding and landmarks of early New Amsterdam, and the “golden reign” of Governor Wouter van Twiller are included in the history. Van Twiller is described as a very wise Dutchman who never said a foolish thing.

The greedy Tom Walker, a selfish miser, worships money. When he takes a walk in the swamp, he meets the devil (referred to as "Old Scratch"). Old Scratch makes a deal with Tom Walker, offering a treasure hidden in the swamp in exchange for a great price. One day, the payment becomes due....

American author Washington Irving is known for his legendary tales like Sleepy Hollow, but also as the great architect behind how Americans now perceive Christmas. In his 1819 collection, The Sketch Book, he devotes one story to a reflection on the meaning of Christmas and its celebration. The story’s protagonist reflects on how its ancient rituals may have vanished almost completely, but that the warmth of togetherness will still prevail for those who welcome it.

Deep in the forested hills of Hudson's Bay lays the quaint country farm town known as Sleepy Hollow. The area is also well known for being haunted by the Headless Horseman. This story is an adaptation of the 1820 original by Washington Irving. While trying to remain true to the style and flow of the original, the text has been edited and rewritten for the 21st-century listener by award-winning author Basil Sands, who also performed the narration.
