August Messer war Professor für Philosophie und Pädagogik in Gießen. Er gehörte zudem der sogenannten Würzburger Schule an, eine Gruppe von Psychologen und Philosophen, die zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts Forschungen im Bereich der Kognitionspsychologie betrieben, damals noch Denkpsychologie genannt.
