Beatrix Potter's delightful retelling of the famous Aesop fable. In Potter's version, little Timmy Willie, a country mouse, accidentally hops a ride into town in a vegetable hamper. There he meets Johnny Town-Mouse, a sophisticated city resident, and all his friends. Adjusting to the great differences between his home life and the city living conditions proves challenging for little Timmy Willie. Adjusting is similarly challenging when Johnny Town-Mouse comes to visit Timmy Willie in the country.

Mr. Tod is a fox that no one can call "nice", and Tommy Brock is a badger who frequently inhabits one or another of Mr. Tod's houses whenever he fancies. Tommy Brock steals all seven of Benjamin Bunny's baby rabbits while Old Mr. Bouncer, who was supposed to be watching them, was asleep. Benjamin sets off to find his babies and gets his cousin, Peter Rabbit, to help. Mr. Tod, Tommy Brock, Benjamin, and Peter all come together at Mr. Tod's house at the top of Bull Banks, where the trouble gets worse.

While Simpkin is out, the tailor discovers all the mice Simpkin has hidden under the teacups and accidentally frees them all. They run out of the house, but not before they overhear him speak aloud his fears that he will not be able to complete his work.
