Robert Louis Stevenson, (1850 - 1894), was born in Edinburgh. His life has always held a fascinating romantic attraction, especially for his contemporaries. His mercurial temperament, expressed so eloquently with his flashing pen, was best revealed when he took up a cause in defense of justice. Although known primarily for the novels Kidnapped and Treasure Island, his works are by no means reserved for the youth market.

Jim Hawkins is a young boy who lives at his parents’ inn, near Bristol. After Billy Bones, an old sea captain, mysteriously dies at the inn, Hawkins unlocks his sea chest and finds a treasure map. The mysterious treasure map arouses Jim’s curiosity and sparks a wild and adventurous treasure hunt. Before long, Jim has gathered a crew of untrustworthy pirates and sails off to Treasure Island. Long John Silver with his missing leg and his parrot is part of the voyage.

Set amidst the islands of Hawaii, "The Bottle Imp" tells the tale of Keawe, a young man who comes into possession of a bottle containing a shadowy creature that grants his every wish. The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde was an immediate success and is one of Stevenson's best-selling works. Within a year of its publication, stage adaptations began in Boston and London, and soon moved all across England and then towards his home in Scotland. The novella has gone on to inspire scores of major film and stage performances. The work centers around Dr. Jekyll, one man with two personalities, one apparently good and the other evil.

It was a nightmare from which he was furious to have been woken which triggered Robert Louis Stevenson's most successful and famous work. Having been stirred from what he termed 'a fine bogey tale', Stevenson set about putting his nightmare onto paper. It reputedly took him only three days to write, but the story of a split personality warring with itself between righteousness and immorality is as much a part of modern thought as it became in 1885.
