日本の大衆小説作家吉川英治による歴史小説。新聞連載小説として中外商業新報などで昭和14年から18年までの4年間連載された。戦後に単行本として刊行され、絶大な人気を博した。 【あらすじ】 曹操が、呉を攻略しようと百万の軍勢で南下してきた。恐れをなした呉の重臣には、戦う前から降伏を主張する者が多かった。そこへ、劉備の使いとして孔明が一人、乗り込み、舌戦を繰り広げる。「諸卿らは、一身の安きを思うて国恥を念とせず、ご主君をして、曹賊の軍門に膝を屈せしめようとしておられるではないか。――その懦弱、卑劣……」重臣らの生き方までえぐり出して論破する。これほど鮮やかな討論は他にない。呉は、開戦へ向け、方針を大転換させた。
