Mathias had a peaceful, simple life. A ranger and a far-out link to the emperor changed everything. Fidem is ruled by the evermore paranoid emperor Ludicious III from the capital of Maiestate. Aging and seeking to secure his throne as he withers away, he orders the murder of any with a claim to his throne.

The throne has been secured, but at what cost? As our new rulers find their feet, they learn that not everyone has their best interests at heart. As old friends test their loyalty, a new threat emerges. Reports of giant warriors leaving a wake of destruction throughout the empire drives Mathias and Fayette on different paths. As all starts to fall down around them, a little girl called Ida cements her place in their hearts as their adopted daughter. With a major threat in the north and trouble close to Maiestate, the emergence of a new face puts the fear into the heart of Fayette.

The sudden appearance of Fayette's brother leaves the palace on alert. As Ida is left reeling at the news of the pregnancy she makes a decision that will change the fate of many in Fidem. As she runs away from home, terrible news of betrayal arrives that almost leaves Mathias a broken man. Will Ida return to her place in the palace? Will the betrayal leave Fidem in civil war or can young Ida play a bigger role than she ever thought possible?
