崇祯十五年（公元1642年），明朝风雨飘摇，大厦将倾，但东林党与阉党的斗争还在延续。东林领袖钱谦益在与内阁首辅周延儒的政治交易败露之后导致江南知识分子内部也陷于四分五裂。两年之后，农民军攻入北京，明朝政权土崩瓦解，残余势力在南京拥立新君。然而各派间仍然是明争暗斗。最后，清军南下，史可法一死殉国；钱谦益献城投降；复社才子冒襄举家逃难；黄宗羲参加抗清斗争，并顿悟民主思想……江南知识分子在“天崩地解”的巨变中，走上了各不相同的道路。
