C. B. Owen is a professor of computer science at Michigan State University. Like his character Alistair Quill, he has built his career at the intersection of computing and the real world. He is an award-winning educator whose research explores augmented reality and accessible computing. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Dartmouth College and lives in East Lansing, Michigan, with his wife. In 2025, after losing much of his vision, he returned to writing fiction for the first time in more than forty years.
