I grew up an Iowa farm girl and was a rodeo queen! My childhood horse, Sundance, and I explored river valleys shrouded in forests and Indian mounds, pioneer ruins, old stagecoach trails, buffalo wallows, and an abandoned coal mine. My love of history was born! As a University of Iowa grad student, I taught Iowa Writers’ Workshop students. I began my magazine career at Better Homes & Gardens, then amassed numerous writing credits, including New York Times, NYT Magazine, and Connoisseur. I also taught at Northwestern and Marquette universities. But I always dreamed of writing a novel. I launched a historical blog, Notes from the Frontier, that has more than 100,000 readers. Then finally, I became a debut novelist at age 70, after a life-and-death struggle with kidney failure and a heart attack.
