For more than 45 years, Douglas Brouwer served as a Presbyterian pastor — in Wheaton, Illinois, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Zürich, Switzerland, the latter an international congregation which drew members from more than twenty nationalities and language groups. Following retirement, he returned to Europe twice as an interim pastor, serving first in Lucerne, Switzerland and then in The Hague, the Netherlands. Doug is the author of seven nonfiction books. His most recent, The Traveler's Path: Finding Spiritual Growth and Inspiration Through Travel (2025), received the Award of Excellence from the Religion Communicators Council's 2026 Wilbur Awards. His memoir, Chasing After Wind: A Pastor's Life, reflects on four decades of ministry. His other books include Remembering the Faith, How to Become a Multicultural Church, What Am I Supposed to Do With My Life?, Beyond I Do: What Christians Believe about Marriage, and The Truth About Who We Are: A Letter to My Grandchildren. Travel has been part of Doug's life since childhood road trips with his family. Over the course of his ministry he has led mission trips, pilgrimages, and study tours around the world. In recent years he has discovered the joys and challenges of walking the Camino paths in Spain and Portugal by himself. He is a frequent contributor to the Reformed Journal — where he has been published since 1980 — as well as the Englewood Review of Books. Doug received his undergraduate degree from Calvin University and his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. His wife and frequent travel partner, Susan DeYoung, practiced law for most of her career and retired as executive director of Habitat for Humanity in Broward County, Florida. Their older daughter is a Presbyterian pastor in the Twin Cities; their younger daughter is a health economist and university faculty member in Seattle.
