The Decameron is one of the greatest literary works of the Middle Ages. Das Dekameron oder Il Decamerone ist eine Sammlung von 100 Novellen, die der Feder von Giovanni Boccaccio entstammen. Die Abfassung erfolgte aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach zwischen 1349 und 1353. Der Titel Decamerone bedeutet - in Anlehnung an das Griechische - "Zehn-Tage-Werk". Es handelt sich um ein stilbildendes Werk, das zum Vorbild fast aller weiteren abendländischen Novellensammlungen geworden ist...

Saladin wird, als Kaufmann verkleidet, von Herrn Torello geehrt und bewirtet. Der Kreuzzug erfolgt. Herr Torello, der seiner Gattin eine Frist gesetzt hat, nach der sie sich wieder vermählen möge, wird gefangen und dadurch, dass er Falken abrichtet, dem Sultan bekannt. Dieser erkennt ihn wieder und ehrt ihn. Herr Torello wird hierauf krank und durch magische Kunst in einer Nacht nach Pavia versetzt. Hier wird er bei der Hochzeit, die seine Gattin feiert, von ihr erkannt und kehrt mit ihr in sein Haus zurück.

Zehn Florentiner Adlige, die im Pestjahr 1348 aus der Stadt fliehen, erzählen einander Geschichten, um sich die Zeit zu vertreiben. In diesen wird leidenschaftlich geliebt, inbrünstig gehasst, gelitten, betrogen und schamlos verführt. Den Sprechern dieses bunten Erzählreigens, darunter Größen wie Gert Westphal, Uwe Friedrichsen u. v. a., gelingt es, Boccaccios burlesken Tonfall mittels einer fein bemessenen Ironie und dank eines unbestechlichen Gespürs für Situationskomik aufs Trefflichste zu veredeln.
