Although The Nowhere Sisters is my sixth novel, it is the first to be published by ChocLit, an imprint of Joffe books so this is the beginning of a new, exciting era for me. All of my books are set during the Second World War and with every year that goes by, fewer and fewer people who lived through that period of time remain with us so it is left to others to tell their stories. In my opinion, what happened during those six years is more relevant today than it has ever been. There are factions all over the world that profess hate instead of love and intolerance rather than acceptance. We must remember the proclamations and beliefs that drove adults in Europe to herd children, like the two main characters in The Nowhere Sisters, onto trains to take up completely different lives in Allied countries. It is unthinkable that similar situations could become prevalent again today. Whilst undertaking the research for all of my books, I learned so much about the courage, adaptability, and resilience displayed by women and men during the war. I have also come to understand that the experiences people had during that time in terms of the human condition are still being experienced now in other times and places. The details may differ but human beings, and the ways in which they react, don’t change. Universal emotions, ambitions, love, loss, parenting and a whole list of other life events remain the same. My novels explore the many ways in which ordinary people are affected by extraordinary events and how they cope during times of adversity. I'm also interested in highlighting the similarities, as opposed to the differences, between people and the way that shared experiences and emotions bind them together. I think it's important to remember all of these things and not just be thankful to the people who fought for freedom then, but take up the banner and continue where they left off. I was born in London but spent my childhood in Southern California where a love of books and literature was instilled in me by bookworm parents and regular trips to the library. For many years, I was a teacher of English and Drama and I worked for many years as an Advisory Teacher for Cambrigeshire Race and Equality Service. Now that my lifelong dream of becoming a published author has come true, I spend my time writing, reading, swimming, walking, cooking, practising yoga and enjoying my grandchildren.
