Katlynn Brooke grew up in 1950s-60s Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), mostly barefoot, occasionally feral, and entirely at home in the bush. While other children were learning the Twist or worrying about exams, she was rattling through the veld in a Land Rover, living in rough camps with no running water or electricity - just wide skies, woodsmoke, and whatever wildlife happened to wander past. Entertainment was strictly DIY. She wrote plays and roped in family members as cast, recording their performances on a trusty 8-track recorder - long before she realized this might count as the beginning of a writing career. Her father's work took the family far off the beaten track, resulting in an education that was part home-schooling, part boarding school, and occasionally straight out of Dickens. It was an unconventional childhood - equal parts adventure, resilience, and the occasional brush with malaria - which later became the foundation for her memoir Tea, Scones, and Malaria (Firebird Award, 2021; B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree), followed by Mimosas, Samosas, and Malaria. Brooke's adult life continued the theme of not staying put for long, with extended stays in India and Indonesia before she eventually settled in Virginia, where she lives with a cat who has assumed full administrative control of the household. She is also the author of the Ialana Series, a young adult fantasy adventure shaped by her lifelong love of unusual worlds, strong heroines, and stories that don't stay politely within the lines. Whether writing memoir or fiction, she draws on a life that began in the wild and never quite left it.
