With a B.S. in Wildlife Biology and Range Management, a minor in Soil Science, and a Master’s in Environmental Policy and Wetland Science, Schuman brings scientific depth and real-world experience to every story. She is a certified Senior Ecologist and Professional Certified Wetland Scientist. As a first responder to the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Schuman witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of human error on fragile ecosystems—an experience that fuels the heart and tension of her fiction. Now based in Port Townsend, Washington, she volunteers with the Marine Science Center, the Northwest Maritime Center, and A Humane World for Animals. Her love of wild places continues to draw her to endangered habitats around the globe. Her memoir, The Understory: A Female Environmentalist in the Land of the Midnight Sun (2022), earned critical acclaim for its honesty and spirit. Her thrillers Where the Sleeping Lady Lies (March 2025) and The Catalyst (September 2025) form the Rare Earth Series, where science, suspense, and the natural world collide.
