Malcolm Gaskill is Emeritus Professor of Early Modern History at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, and an expert in witchcraft trials, the history of mentalities and emotions, and spiritualism and psychical research. He is also interested in war and memory in the twentieth century, which is the subject of his most recent book, The Glass Mountain: War and Discovery in Wartime Italy (2025). His other books include: Witchfinders: A Seventeenth-Century English Tragedy (2005); Between Two Worlds: How the English Became Americans (2014); and Hellish Nell: The Curious Case of Britain's Last Witch Trial (2023). The Ruin of All Witches: Life and Death in the New World (2021) was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize, and was both a Waterstones Non-Fiction Book of the Month and a Sunday Times Bestseller. Worlds of Fear and Wonder: Living with the Supernatural, Past and Present will be published in October 2026. Gaskill is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and a frequent contributor to the London Review of Books. He lives in Cambridge with his wife and their three children.
