The Ocean environment has been central to Neva Sullaway’s life. She has crossed the Pacific twice in small sailing boats and was a former competitive sailing champion and sea-going photojournalist. Neva hasn't strayed too far from the written word. In college, she assisted in the publication of a Guide to (Scuba) Diving Along the West Coast. The San Diego author/editor has written three non-fiction books with maritime themes, including Chasing Dreamtime - A Seagoing Hitchhiker’s Journey through Memory and Myth (multi-award winner, Brookview Press, 2005); Sailing in San Diego - A Pictorial History (for the 1992 America’s Cup) and One with the Wind - A Guide to Windsurfing in Australia (1980). Neva published the Maritime Museum of San Diego's peer-reviewed, academic Journal of Pacific Maritime History for ten years (2006-2016). One of those publications became a book titled Swift Boats at War in Vietnam (Stackpole Books, 2017) – a collection of 38 personal stories that relay the gamut of the war experience. As an editor, Sullaway has assisted in the publication of dozens of books, including White Water Red Hot Lead (Casemate, 2015), KŌKUA (2020), SOLI BULA (2022) and Corporal Cannon (Casemate, 2022). Neva contributed to San Diego's expansive fishing history (from the Kumeyaay to modern cuisine) and edited San Diego Seafood-Then and Now, a beautifully photographed and illustrated cookbook (Sunbelt Publications, 2025). Upcoming releases in 2026: Neva Sullaway has partnered with Doc White Photography to create the nonprofit Ocean Magic Productions – book/film productions that explore, educate, and engage people of all ages, by diving into one of our most precious resources – the Pacific Ocean. Baja to Bering (Vol.1) will hopefully be available in Spring 2026. Sullaway’s eclectic projects reflect a sailor’s life driven by passion, with many deviations in course.
