From the outside, Paul Cook had everything going for him. He was young, had a successful career in radio, a lovely wife, and a sweet family. Yet, one night he found himself in a near-catatonic overdose caused by ingesting an abundance of ketamine.
Caught up in substance abuse during those early years, he wrote his book, “Cooked in LA,” on his first years at Y98 and the year in California. Published in 2009, the book covers three years of his life spent self-medicating.
Paul’s First Act was written in the high-decibel world of FM radio. It was a season of "wild times" and "dead air" stories—navigating the cutthroat media landscape of Los Angeles, building a massive following in the St. Louis market, and experiencing the terrifying, wonderful transition into fatherhood. He was the afternoon voice people drove home to, the personality that defined the afternoon commute, and a man living life at a breakneck pace.
Then, the music stopped. The Second Act arrived not with a round of applause, but with a series of life-altering collisions. Within a short window, Paul faced a diagnosis of colorectal cancer, the arduous path to sobriety, and the soul-crushing reality of being fired from his radio home of nearly two decades. To the outside observer, the script seemed to be winding down. The industry veteran was out of a job, out of health, and seemingly out of options. It was a period of silence that led many to wonder if Paul Cook would ever find his voice again.
Against every expectation, Paul staged a total professional rebirth. He stepped away from the microphone and in front of the camera, joining KSDK-TV. What began as a strategic pivot into morning traffic reporting quickly transformed as Paul meticulously learned a new craft. His dedication didn’t just get him back on his feet; it propelled him to the anchor desk. Paul is now the regular Noon Anchor for KSDK, spending upwards of five hours live on-air every single day. This new platform is larger, more visible, and more influential than radio ever was, making him a household face in the region he loves.
Today, Paul is more than just a newsman. He is a survivor who has been cancer-free for years, a father who has seen the other side of the storm, and a sought-after keynote speaker. Through his platform, The Manual Override, he shares his hard-won wisdom on managing stress, fostering authentic human connection, and "bringing it" when the stakes are highest. Paul’s Third Act is a powerful reminder that being "cooked" doesn't mean you're finished—it means you're ready.
But Paul wasn't interested in an early intermission. The Third Act—the one he is living right now—has become the most defiant and successful chapter of his life.
